A week ago, the government faced criticism of private electric scooters. Critics said these roads have become “lawless wild west” since they were approved.
Parliament was told that ministers encouraged the “de facto legalization” of electric equipment, leading to a situation where “riders intimidated pedestrians”.
The Conservative government has been criticized in the House of Lords for the proliferation of electric scooters, which has raised safety concerns and claimed that the police “turned a blind eye”.
Although it can be purchased for free and is common on roads and sidewalks, electric scooters cannot be used legally in the UK, except on private land.
Currently, as part of an official government trial, rental scooters are currently only allowed to be used nationwide, and riding on sidewalks is not allowed.
When raising this issue in Westminster, the Liberal Democrat Baroness Ludford said: “This government claims to represent the Rule of Law Party. Of course they often talk about repression, but when it comes to electric scooters, they allow, and even encourage, Legalization in fact, without the necessary legislation to protect riders and the public.
“This has caused the problem to escalate to out of control in the lawless Wild West, where riders are terrorizing pedestrians, especially those with disabilities and visual impairments.
“The government has also failed to regulate the sale and use of personal belongings. There may be hundreds of thousands of personal belongings. Why does this government refuse to take action on electric scooters and protect people’s safety?”
