According to the Raleigh News Observer, in North Carolina, dozens of people gathered near the State Capitol on Saturday to protest the verdict. The speaker led a crowd of about 75 people chanting “No justice, no peace!” and “Abolish the police!” Police officers on motorcycles accompanied the protesters and blocked traffic for them as they marched through bars and restaurants along the street.
After George Floyd was murdered by police in Minneapolis last year, there were continuous and often violent protests in Portland. Some activists complained that the police response was too harsh. Soon after Rittenhouse’s verdict, Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell said that officers were making plans for Friday nights and weekends.
By around 8:50 in the evening, about 200 protesters gathered in downtown Portland and blocked the streets. By 9 pm, the windows were broken and the doors of city facilities were damaged.
The police wrote on Twitter: “A group of people gathered near Southeast Second Avenue and Southeast Madison Street. Participants began to break windows and destroy the doors of urban facilities in the area. People threw objects at police officers in the area.”
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office designated the incident as a riot and said at a press conference on Saturday morning that some demonstrators threw urine, water bottles and batteries at the police.
