Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday described the US war in Afghanistan as a tragedy for all involved.
“The U.S. military has been stationed in this territory for 20 years. For 20 years, it has tried to…make the people living there civilized, instilling their own norms and living standards in the broadest sense of the word, including when it comes to social politics Organization,” Putin said when commenting on teenagers at an educational institution in the Russian Far East. Putin added: “The result will only cause tragedy and loss of life to those who do this, the United States, and those living on the territory of Afghanistan. The result is zero, if not a total negative,”.
The Russian leader also emphasized that when it comes to Afghans, “it is impossible to impose anything on them from the outside.”
The United States completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan on Monday, ending a 20-year war in the country. It left with the Taliban, a radical Islamic organization that stepped down shortly after its first invasion in 2001 and regained control of Afghanistan. The Biden administration has faced widespread criticism for handling the issue of troop withdrawal.
On the issue of Afghanistan, Russia has its own painful history.
From 1979 to 1989, the Soviet Union launched a devastating war in Afghanistan and ultimately failed to support the then Communist government. For most of that conflict, Putin was a young KGB officer in Germany.
