Man murdered in suspected homophobic attack in the east London Has been named.
Ranjith Kakanamalage, also known as Roy, was found dead in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park at 6.30 am on Monday, August 16.
The 50-year-old man suffered serious head injuries and an autopsy confirmed that they were caused by Blunt force trauma, police Said.
His death was regarded as a homophobic hate crime. A 36-year-old man arrested in connection with the investigation has been released on bail.
Hackney and Tower Hamlets police commander and detective chief superintendent Marcus Barnett said: “This is a terrible murder. My heart is with Ranjith’s family and relatives.
“Although such incidents are still very rare in London, I want to assure the community that my police officers and professional detectives are working tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“I also want to make it clear that there is no place for any form of hate crime in London, and Metropolis is absolutely committed to solving it and supporting the victims. We are here to serve you.”
Detectives urged local residents and gay community members to “prioritize their personal safety” when going out at night, “pay attention to the surrounding environment, avoid listening to loud music, and avoid dimly lit places as much as possible.”
The Met spokesperson added that patrols in the area have increased.
The police stated that the police have also been working with LGBT+ advisory groups and LGBT+ charities to “encourage community members to stay safe” and provide any information after the attack.
Crime Commissioner Pete Wallis added: “My police officer works with local colleagues 24/7 and uses Metropolis resources.
“We will bring justice to Ranjith’s family at all costs, who were destroyed in this terrible incident.
“I need anyone with information to contact us immediately. Have you seen anyone acting suspiciously in a park or area? You must tell us what you know. Ranjith’s family is destroyed, and your information can help us bring They are just.”
The crime scene remains in the park.
Derek Lee from the LGBT+ Advisory Group said this is a voluntary group of independent consultants working with the police and parliament.: “We are ensuring that the LGBT+ issue is resolved in the investigation of this tragic death and a broader response to the safety of Tower Hamlet and London as a whole.”
