Rare Einstein manuscript will sell for millions of dollars

Albert Einstein’s graffiti is displayed on the wall.

On Tuesday, a rare manuscript by the theoretical physicist Albert Einstein was auctioned in Paris, and the auctioneer’s goal was to place a price.

According to Christie’s, who presided over the auction on behalf of the Agutes auction house, the manuscript contains preparations for Einstein’s key achievement, the theory of relativity, and is valued at between US$23,000 and US$3.4 million.

Christie’s said in a statement:

There is no doubt that this is the most valuable Einstein manuscript ever auctioned.

This 54-page document was handwritten by Einstein and his colleague and confidant Swiss engineer Michel Besso in 1913 and 1914 in Zurich, Switzerland.

Christie’s stated that thanks to Besso, the manuscript was preserved for future use.

Christie’s stated that it was “almost like a miracle” because the German-born genius himself is unlikely to insist on what he considers to be a simple working document.

It said that today, this paper provides “in-depth understanding of the thinking of the greatest scientist of the 20th century.”

Einstein died in 1955 at the age of 76. He is considered to be one of the greatest physicists of all time. He used the theory of relativity to completely change his field and made significant contributions to the theory of quantum mechanics.

He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 and was later regarded by popular culture as an idol of a genius scientist, thanks to his iconic unruly hair, beard and bushy eyebrows.
