Samsung lags behind its renewable energy pledge: Greenpeace

But Greenpeace stated that renewable energy only accounted for 17.6% of the company’s global energy structure in 2020, and emphasized that its two main production centers-South Korea and Vietnam-were not included in the initial commitment.

Greenpeace stated in its report that these two countries account for approximately 80% of Samsung Electronics’ global electricity consumption, and that both countries “are heavily dependent on fossil fuels.” The report is based on Samsung’s own disclosures and statistics.

in the South, Samsung It has its own solar panels and geothermal power generation facilities, but they only generated “a small part” of the huge electricity usage of 17 TWh last year-more than 70% of the company’s global consumption.

Samsung Electronics is one of the largest electricity consumers in the South, and this situation poses a challenge to President Moon Jae-in’s country to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
