The Department of Energy (DOE) and Manila Electric Company (Meralco) advise the public to adopt energy conservation as a way of life to reduce your need for electricity, especially during the dry season.
Together with DOE, Meralco enables consumers to engage in regular energy conservation activities to better manage their electricity usage, often primarily due to increased use of refrigeration equipment.
Energy efficiency is “the best energy-saving device,” and consumers have the ability to limit their consumption, Patrick T. Aquino, administrator of the Energy Utilization Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy, said in a webinar hosted by Meralco.
“Energy efficiency is our number one fuel. It’s our first line of defense,” he said, emphasizing the importance of changing consumer behavior and investing in energy-efficient technologies.
Aquino added that demand-side management also helps ensure sufficient and continuous supply for other electricity consumers.
“When we can manage our demand efficiently, we are able to reduce our need for electricity generation,” he said.
Just as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued an El Niño alert, calling for continued observation of energy efficiency practices, noting that there is an 80% chance that this will begin as early as June and continue through the first quarter of 2024 Year.
To help businesses become more energy efficient, Meralco, through its business unit MServ, offers energy audit services and solutions, such as data visualization and energy efficiency reporting, to enable seamless adoption of the practice.
“At any given level, we can support our customers, whether it’s a small consultancy job or a full-scale repair of a cooling system, we are flexible in this regard. They can contact us and we can provide support for their energy efficiency journey Support.Protection Act.
Both Meralco and the U.S. Department of Energy have assured the public of their ongoing efforts to ensure reliable electrical service and adequate power throughout the dry season. They also urged more companies to join the government’s Interruptible Load Program (ILP), which prevents households from losing power during red alerts or when supply is insufficient to meet demand.
Distributors recently secured a commitment of 56 megawatts (MW) of additional shed capacity, which, once registered, will expand the distribution company’s ILP capacity from the current 560 MW to 616 MW. As of today, there are 117 companies registered with the ILP within the Meralco franchise area.
The DOE discourages power plants from scheduling outages and testing units during the dry season. “Meralco works with the government to promote energy efficiency and conservation, not only during the critical dry season, but also as an acceptable way of life for Filipino consumers,” said a Meralco spokesperson and Vice
said Joe Zaldarriaga, President of Corporate Communications.
