SCAN Health plans to enter Texas, expand Nevada presence


The company announced last week that Medicare Advantage insurer SCAN Health Plan will begin offering health plans in two Texas counties and expand its service in Nevada in 2023.

The counties in Texas are Harris County and Bexar County, which includes Houston and San Antonio. In Nevada, the health plan is currently in Clark County and is expanding into Nye County.

“Because we’re currently in Nevada, it’s a natural extension of our current presence,” said Shirley Stanislaw, general manager and officer of the health program. “[With] Texas, this year we expanded into Arizona and Nevada, so it felt like a natural extension as we expanded southwest. “

Stanislaw added that Texas has a lot of Medicare-eligible people, which appeals to SCAN because it only serves seniors.

In the new Texas market, SCAN is contracting with Orange, Calif.-based Houston-based IntegraNet Health and Prospect Medical Group, Stanislaw said. SCAN has partnered with Prospect in its California and Arizona markets. When considering a partner, Stanislaw said, SCAN looks for those with a strong reputation in the community and expertise in serving seniors, qualities that these medical groups share.

While expanding into these new markets, health plans are doing a lot of outreach to ensure consumers, providers and brokers know SCAN is available, Stanislaw said.

“We’ve been meeting with agents to introduce ourselves, and I’d say 50 percent of the agents know who SCAN is, and 50 percent of them haven’t heard of us,” Stanislaw said. “A key effort is getting our name out there, talking to key stakeholders, brokers, suppliers and consumers about who SCAN is, making our brand stand out and letting people know how we stand out from the competition.”

SCAN’s competitors include big payers such as UnitedHealthcare and Anthem, CEO Sachin Jain told MedCity in a previous interview. But what sets SCAN apart from its competitors is that it is a nonprofit and “invests and reinvests in our members and the benefits and services we can provide,” Stanislaw said.

Although it’s moving into a new market, Stanislaw emphasizes that SCAN is not a startup, which makes it easier to grow. The company was established in 1977.

“We have 45 years of history,” she said. “We’re no strangers to MA. We’re solidly grounded and experienced. We’re new to Texas.”

SCAN has not stopped these expansions, she added. The company hopes to expand into more markets in the coming years, but Stanislaw declined to say which ones.

“I always say that the best way to achieve our mission is to make it available to more people,” Stanislaw said.
