Flash point
During the Yuen Long attack, more than one hundred men rushed on protesters, reporters and ordinary commuters, sending about 50 people to the hospital.
Most of the attacks are broadcast online by reporters and victims. The police later confirmed that some of the people involved were connected to organized crime gangs in the underworld.
The ambush was a public relations disaster for the Hong Kong government, especially after the police were photographed talking to men holding white clubs and asking them to leave the scene.
An award-winning investigation by Radio Television Hong Kong found that the police did not prevent the assembly of men holding sticks in Yuen Long hours before the attack.
Bao Choy, the producer of the investigation, was later convicted of improper license plate searches in the process of tracking down the assailants.
