The demand for accommodation is soaring. According to Mintel, Britons will spend approximately £7.1 billion on accommodation this summer.
However, whether you have been enjoying your vacation in the UK, or the pandemic has forced you to be closer to home-just like you are going overseas-travel insurance should be an important part of your holiday travel.
Accommodation insurance will ensure that if you have an accident while resting, you will not pay out of your pocket. And, since we are all used to planning to get into chaos at the last minute, it will also step in if you find that you have to cancel or shorten your vacation.
Here, let’s take a look at what accommodation insurance requires, and more specifically, what protection it provides for Covid.
Which travel insurance policies cover accommodation?
Although independent accommodation insurance can be compared and purchased, some overseas travel insurance policies will automatically include UK insurance. Therefore, if you plan to travel abroad in the next 12 months, a multi-trip travel insurance once a year can provide the best value.
But of course it must be checked, the UK is also covered.
Also check other relevant terms and conditions in the policy. For example, the definition of what is-what is not-accommodation varies. Some insurance companies stipulate the distance from home, such as at least 25 miles, while others require you to stay at least two nights in the booked accommodation before your accommodation will be covered.
Does my accommodation policy cover Covid?
Since you are in the UK, if you contract COVID-19 during your stay, the NHS will cover emergency and ongoing medical care.
However, if you want travel insurance to cover the cost of returning home early due to infection, you need to look for an insurance policy that provides enhanced Covid insurance. (Remember, if you travel in violation of government recommendations, your claim may be invalid.)
The same applies if your trip is completely cancelled because you, one of your travel companions, or tested positive for the virus within 14 days before your departure.
When you run a quote on the UK travel insurance comparison website, the key factors related to Covid should now be clearly listed in the process. However, the more detailed policy wording and Covid coverage levels vary from insurance company to insurance company, so be sure to check the individual terms and conditions before registering.
If your vacation is cancelled or shortened due to Covid, it is also important to accurately understand the terms in which the insurance company may intervene.
BIBA Executive Director Graeme Trudgill explained: “Like overseas holiday insurance, travel insurance policies are designed to cover irrecoverable expenses, so your insurance company expects you to contact your accommodation and transportation providers before then. Contact me and I will help you.”
What about non-Covid medical insurance?
If you travel overseas, many overseas travel insurance policies provide medical insurance worth millions of pounds. However, as mentioned earlier, this is not necessary for accommodation, because if you need treatment, you can visit the NHS.
Some travel insurance policies will include some accommodation coverage, but this may be limited to emergency medical and dental treatments for immediate pain relief.
In addition, if you are unwell and unable to go home while on vacation, or if you want to be sent to a medical institution closer to your home for treatment, your travel insurance company may pay for additional travel or accommodation costs for you.
What other services does UK travel insurance provide?
Travel insurance for home travel provides you with many protection benefits that you can enjoy when traveling abroad. These include:
- Cancellation and reduction of insurance-if you find that you cannot go on holiday or have to go home early due to family injury or illness or death, you can pay this fee
- Baggage and personal items-if any of your items are lost, stolen or damaged when you leave, your travel insurance policy can cover the cost of replacing them
- Eventual supplier failure-some policies include if your accommodation is affected by the financial failure of one of the suppliers (such as a hotel, RV parking or car rental company). This is especially important when the economy is in trouble and these companies are more likely to fail
- Personal liability-if you accidentally hurt someone or damage property during your stay, this will cover you. For example, breaking the window of your holiday cottage or smashing someone’s teeth with a passionate swing on a crazy golf course.
If you want a professional accommodation and travel insurance policy, you may find that the insurance includes some convenient additional services. These may include vehicle breakdown insurance, event cancellation insurance and even hospitalization benefits to cover some of the expenses that you may incur if you have to stay overnight in the hospital.
How can I get the best accommodation insurance?
First, make sure you have not yet obtained insurance, such as travel insurance included in the packaged current account.
Or, you may already have an annual travel insurance policy. If so, please check if it also covers UK holidays.
The fine print on your family property insurance is also worth reading. If your personal belongings are lost or stolen while you are away, some people will pay. It’s great to have this, but please weigh whether you need the extra protection and peace of mind provided in your travel insurance policy.
If you do purchase a new policy, make sure to compare transactions to get the best value protection that meets your requirements. But remember to check that you haven’t lost valuable insurance or added a large excess that might eliminate any benefits of the claim.
