Best Deli Board Tips
For all budding characters, here are some helpful tips when planning and crafting a beautiful platter:
- Plan per person: Are you spending a low-key evening with the girls, or a big holiday feast? When planning your ingredients, consider the number of people you’ll be serving so you can be sure there’s enough food for everyone. I recommend eating about 3-4 slices of cheese and meat per person when serving deli as an appetizer. Double it if you’re using it as a main or more crowd!
- Easy clean up: To make cleanup easier, place a sheet of parchment paper on your plate or plank before you load the deli.
- Schedule Tips: If you’re new to the world of platter arrangements, use the photo as a reference! Otherwise, simple things like changing the texture and color of ingredients go a long way to adding interest. Give your guests lots of options!
- Note the cheese: If you’re showing a mixture of different cheeses, it’s a good idea to separate the heavier cheeses from the milder ones (this will prevent the flavor from spilling out). If certain cheese choices are particularly pungent or trendy, you may also want to consider labeling them so you don’t surprise your guests!
- To serve cheese at room temperature: Cheese tastes best when taken out of the refrigerator about 30 minutes to an hour before serving.
- Use decoration: Garnishes are a great way to complete a deli board. Sprigs of herbs like thyme and rosemary, or basil, parsley, and flowers can be added for pretty color or to fill in any bare spots.
Can I prepare my board ahead of time?
Another big win for the deli board? You can do it 100% ahead of time! Prepare your arrangement a few hours in advance, cover with plastic wrap, and take it out an hour or so before serving so the cheese can warm a bit.
One thing to remember: don’t put cookies while the board is in the fridge! The cold will make the cookies soggy, so only add them just before serving.
How to store extra content?
Store leftover meats and cheeses tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Cured meats and most cheeses actually last a long time when properly stored. Other ingredients like nuts and preserves extend shelf life and can be placed in airtight containers or jars.
Many ingredients, including vegetables, are great to use in savory sandwich and pack, saladeven Frittata. You can also store and save cooked leftovers for use pizza Toppings!
