According to NBC News, since March 1, the United States has discarded at least 15.1 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine.
NBC cited the response it received to the request for public data that this number is much higher than previously expected and may still be underestimated because it is based on self-reported data from pharmacies, states, and other suppliers.
At least seven states are missing from the numbers, as well as major federal agencies.
The reasons for wasted dose vary, including broken vials, incorrect dilution of vaccine, malfunctioning of the freezer, and more doses in the vial than desired. Once the vial is punctured, the window for several hours of use is limited.
According to public data collected by our data world, due to supply constraints, underdeveloped countries are struggling to vaccinate their populations. Only 2.8% of the population on the African continent is vaccinated.

On the other hand, the United States has received approximately 440 million doses of vaccines and vaccinated 52% of its population-this number could be much higher without a large proportion of people hesitating about vaccines.
More than 1 million Americans have received a third dose of vaccine due to weakened immunity, and the country plans to provide the third dose to everyone eight months after the second dose starting later this month.
“This is a fair issue,” Tim Dolan, a professor of health policy at York University, told NBC. “You have a very wealthy country, you can get vaccines very well, basically you just throw them away.”
The United States has pledged to provide about 600 million doses of vaccine to low- and middle-income countries, and has donated 110 million doses as of early August.
