The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) for consumers in all cities rose by 0.5% on a seasonally adjusted basis in July and 0.9% in June. In the past 12 months, all project indexes have increased by 5.4% before seasonal adjustments.
In July, indicators such as housing, food, energy, and new cars all rose, which drove the monthly increase in seasonally adjusted indicators. The food index rose 0.7% in July, five of the major grocery store food indexes rose, and the outgoing food index rose 0.8%. The energy index rose 1.6% in July, the gasoline index rose 2.4%, and other energy component indexes also rose.
