The Jakarta government said in a statement on Sunday that two Sumatran tigers at a zoo in Indonesia were recovering from Covid-19 after testing positive for Covid-19 in mid-July, adding that the authorities were trying to find out how they were Infected.
The statement said that 9-year-old Tiger Tino and 12-year-old Harry were tested for coronavirus after showing flu-like symptoms, difficulty breathing and loss of appetite.
Suzi Marsitawati, head of the Jakarta Parks and Urban Forest Office, said the tigers have been treated for about 10 to 12 days and are gradually showing signs of recovery.
“Their appetite is back, and they are active again,” Su Zi said, although both tigers are under close observation.
She said that the authorities are tracking and tracing how the tiger was infected.
Speaking of Jakarta Zoo, Suzi said:
When the animals began to show symptoms, the Ragunan Zoo was closed due to emergency movement restrictions.
She added that none of the caregivers and workers tested positive for the coronavirus before and after the animals were infected.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Indonesia has suffered the worst coronavirus infection in Southeast Asia, with more than 3.4 million infections and more than 94,000 deaths.
