Upcycling has never been so fun! Ortigas Malls hosts sustainable yard sales every second Sunday of the month from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Greenhills and Estancia, making it easy for people to buy and sell beloved items, upcycle and donate.
One of the key aspects of the circular economy in the Philippines is to raise awareness among people and encourage them to engage in recycling, upcycling and other sustainable practices that can be integrated into their daily lives.
Upcycling refers to the potential to reimagine items that have outlived their original purpose. Rather than throwing away used or unwanted materials, upcycling artists and enthusiasts see opportunities for reinvention. In the hands of innovative creators, old furniture, containers, textiles, glassware, and even electronic components can be transformed into extraordinary and functional works of art.
It’s also a way for art and home enthusiasts to create and express themselves. Each piece tells a story of transformation, where objects are transformed from the ordinary into the extraordinary, giving them a new purpose or a new appearance, resulting in a unique creation.
Yard sale organizer Aireen Cruz said: “The event aims to promote the reduction of the use of plastic materials that cause serious damage to the environment. It also encourages individuals, organizations and institutions to step up environmental protection activities. This is A convenient way to help organizations and others raise funds by recycling ‘trash’ and displaying and selling their upcycled products.”
“The best thing about the Ortigas Malls Yard Sale is that it brings buyers and sellers together in one event where they can display their pieces and redeem them for cash. It also takes advantage of the Ortigas Malls mixed-use spaces in Greenhills and Estancia,” Arch said. Renee Bacani, vice president of Ortigas Malls.
Non-governmental organizations, some local government units and schools participate in yard sales on the second Sunday of each month. Buyers include Envirocycle, a full-service e-waste recycling company that helps minimize the number of electronic devices ending up in landfills; and environmental group Philippine Advocates for the Earth, Inc. (PACOPI).
The sellers include residents from barangays such as Addition Hills, Wack Wack, Batis and Pasadena; LaSalle Greenhills, LaSalle Greenhills Alternative Education; and BJMP Dormitory. Exhibitors include KILUS Foundation, KILOS, Akbayanihan Eco Store, RVM, RCAM, organizations dedicated to helping clean and protect the environment through recycling and upcycling items.
Aireen added: “The focus of the Greenhills Yard Sale is to reduce waste and convert items into cash or something useful. The event is part of Ortigas Malls’ corporate social responsibility commitment to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable practices for the benefit of all. “
Shoppers have a chance to win raffle prizes from yard sale partners. Zumba classes are held to replenish morning energy for participants and visitors; the first 100 customers to sign up on site will receive free coffee and pandesal.
Show off your upcycling skills or become part of the circular economy by buying some items from sellers at the Greenhills Yard Sale. You can also visit the yard sale in Estancia, Pasig City, which started last August 13. The next yard sale will be held on October 8, 2023.
