Officials said on Monday that after the group’s bloody attacks have increased in recent weeks, the Taliban have launched a crackdown on suspected Islamic State hideouts in southern Afghanistan.
The Taliban Provincial Police Chief Abdul Ghafar Mohammadi (Abdul Ghafar Mohammadi) stated that the operation against the Islamic State-Khorasan began in at least four districts in Kandahar Province around midnight. It lasted until Monday morning.
He said:
So far, four Islamic State (IS) fighters have been killed and ten arrested…one of them blew himself up in a house.
A member of the Taliban intelligence agency who asked not to be named told AFP that at least three civilians were killed in the operation.
Local media quoted a Taliban official as saying that there was also an explosion in the western suburbs of Kabul on Monday morning, causing no casualties.
In the three months since the Taliban came to power, IS-K has been active in Jalalabad, Kunduz, Kandahar and Kabul.
In October, the organization claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing of the Shiite mosque in Kandahar, which killed at least 60 people and injured dozens of others.
A week ago, IS-K claimed that another fatal mosque explosion occurred in northern Kunduz province, killing more than 60 people.
The organization claimed on Sunday that it was responsible for the bomb that destroyed a minibus in Kabul over the weekend, killing a well-known local journalist and two others.
IS-K boasted that it killed or injured “20 Shiite apostates” in the incident.
Earlier this month, IS-K fighters attacked the city’s national military hospital, killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 50 others.
The organization also claimed that there have been several attacks in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar Province in the east, which is a hotbed of IS-K activities.
