Houston officials said at a press conference on Saturday that two 14- and 16-year-old children were killed after a “mass casualty incident” during Travis Scott’s astronomy festival.
In total, 8 people were killed and more than 300 people were injured After a surge in crowds at the annual music festival on Friday. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said that the death toll also includes two 21-year-olds, two 23-year-olds, one 27-year-old and another person of unknown age.
Turner said that of the hundreds of people injured, 25 were taken to the hospital. Thirteen of them are still hospitalized, including 5 minors.
The identity of the deceased has not been announced. Houston officials said on Saturday that six of the families had learned of the death of their relatives.
Officials said earlier on Saturday that about 50,000 people squeezed onto the stage at around 9:38 pm, while the 29-year-old Scott was performing. It is unclear what caused the population surge.
“There are a lot of unanswered questions,” Turner said, adding that the investigation is still ongoing.
The police stated that 25 people were arrested during the incident; 23 involved illegal trespass, 1 involved possession of marijuana, and 1 involved poisoning in a public place.
