ingredients you need
This section explains how to choose the best toppings for sour cream cucumber salad, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. See recipe card below for measurements.
- sour cream – Forms the base of the creamy dressing in this salad. Cucumber and sour cream is a classic combination, but see below for an alternative.
- fresh dill – This is a creamy cucumber dill salad, so I say fresh dill is a must! If that’s all you have, you can use dried dill, but fresh tastes better. If you use a dry substitute, use 1 teaspoon dried per tablespoon of fresh dill.
- olive oil – Use extra virgin olive oil or any neutral oil you like.
- lemon juice – Fresh juices are very refreshing in this creamy cucumber and onion salad, but you can use bottled lemon juice For convenience.
- spices – Garlic powder, sea salt and black pepper.
- cucumber – I use gherkins for a healthy cucumber salad, because gherkins are a bit sweeter than large cucumbers, have a more tender skin, and require less chopping (just slicing). However, any cucumber will do, including English and Persian cucumbers. If it has tough skin, you may need to peel it off first.
- onion – I used red onions here, but sweet onions are delicious too.
Variation: Other dressing substitutes for Cucumber Cream Salad.
Instead of sour cream, you can use mayonnaise (with a little white or apple cider vinegar for the stock) or plain Greek yogurt.
