The medal was won after a frustrating morning on the fifth day of the UK, when the British men’s quartet failed to win a medal in their flagship event, ending five consecutive Olympic champions.
In the men’s double sculls and women’s rudderless quadruples, GB also won fourth place.
“This is our country’s first Olympic medal at this level,” the beaming Beaumont told the BBC afterwards.
“We stand on the shoulders of many people before us, our old teammates. They helped us get here.
“This is another step for us to win the gold medal.”
He added: “It’s wild there. The conditions are difficult and smooth, but this is what we are used to at home.
“We have trained in this area many times and it hasn’t shaken us. We decided that we were in the first lane and did not have a chance to win a medal. Let us bring it to them. We did it. I am very happy.”
