
One of the fascinating aspects of medical technology is not only how doctors can use it to improve collaboration and planning around surgery, but how it can be deployed to help patients understand complex medical procedures and reduce their anxiety.
The convergence of medical technology and health technology is changing the way providers learn to use new medical devices, collaborate, and communicate with patients.
In a series of interviews as part of the Microsoft Envision Healthcare Summit, people focused on the various ways cloud computing technology touches different aspects of healthcare. payermedical technology and pharmaceuticals.
The Israel Medical Simulation Center at Chaim Sheba Medical Center highlights how cloud-based device user guides are just one solution to the healthcare industry’s staffing shortage. It helps clinicians become familiar with new devices, providing self-navigating interactive tutorials for devices they can operate at their own pace. The goal is to help them use the technology to a level of comfort so they don’t hesitate to use it when they need it.
A particularly powerful illustration of how providers are using medical technology is the story of how the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Heart Institute used 3D printing technology and Microsoft’s HoloLens for surgical preparation and patient education.
In a discussion with Kevin Dolan and Ted Dinsmore, Chief Alliance Officers for Microsoft Health and Life Sciences USA, SphereGen President Robert Hannan, a cardiovascular surgeon at the Nicklaus Heart Institute and director of the NCHS Division of Healthcare Quality, offers some insight into the impact of these technology pairings.
“We were sure that when we started printing 3D hearts, they would help us with surgical planning. Before we started looking for 3D printed models, we looked for AR, VR models because we knew they would work synergistically and ultimately understand how Powerful. We can add and subtract 3D models and share annotations of those holographic models in the cloud.
“I underestimated their impact on patients and families in terms of educating, empowering and participating in care.”
In one example, Hannan highlights the journey of a 13-year-old girl from Haiti planning open-heart surgery to address a rare and complex lesion in the structure of her heart. She uses the HoloLens to view a model of her heart, and the surgeon guides her through the heart problems and the procedures used to treat the heart. Relieving the patient’s anxiety and stress contributes to the success of this procedure.
