The earthquake killed 1,300 people Haiti, According to the head of the civil defense agency.
Jerry Chandler said that at least 1,297 people were said to have died and more than 2,800 were injured.
The previously confirmed death toll was 724, but US Geological officials estimate that thousands of people may have lost their lives.
“We did have a serious problem,” Mr. Chandler told Reuters, adding, “When we spoke, there were some very important facilities that were dysfunctional, and those that were functioning properly were receiving a large number of patients.”
The Dominican Republic and Mexico quickly delivered urgently needed food and medicines by air and cross-border HaitiLand borders.
Colombia sent search and rescue personnel, while the United States sent important supplies and deployed a 65-person urban search and rescue team equipped with professional equipment.
Eleven years ago, there was another major earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people.
