Some of the big names in crime fiction failed to advance because two debuts were announced on the five-man shortlist for the McElvanie Award.
The award was formerly known as the Scottish Crime Book of the Year Award, named in honor of William McIlvanney, who is often described as the godfather of black tartan.
This year’s shortlist coincides with the publication of the author’s last book “The Dark Remnants” on Thursday, which was completed with the help of Ian Rankin.
Subtracted from the long list of 13 people, the finalists include 2015 winner Craig Russell, celebrities Stewart McBride and Alan Parkes, and two debut writers Emma Christie and Robbie Morrison.
Those who did not stand out from the long list included Val McDermid, Denise Mina and Chris Brookmyre.
The award judges described Russell as “a writer who never disappoints and always touches the core of the story.”
They praised Parkes’ “April Dead” for “continuous innovation”, and said that “like the carefully drawn characters and suspenseful ending.”
McBride’s “Coffin Maker’s Garden” is described as “a dark, avant-garde and original novel, full of action and a strong sense of place, with just the right sense of humor.”
The edge of Morrison’s grave is “a striking exploration of the gang Glasgow Have a distinct sense of the times”, the judges said.
It is said that Christie’s “The Silent Daughter” adopts the domestic black genre and provides “some fresh and different things, and the characters are well controlled”.
The winner will be announced at the Albert Hall Sterling September 17.
This year’s McIlvanney Prize judges include former Time Crime Club member Karen Robinson, CWA Red Herring Award winner and free crime fiction critic Ayo Onatade, and crime fiction buyer Ewan Wilson from Waterstones Glasgow.
The shortlist was announced by the Bloody Scotland International Crime Writing Festival, which is scheduled to take place in Stirling from September 17th to 19th.
