Nurses are struggling without personal protective equipment, frantically searching for ventilators in hospitals and even the dreaded ping signal from NHS Test and Trace. For most of us, these memories represent the worst part of the Covid pandemic. But for a select few, they are opportunities to make millions.
Consultants have won government Covid contracts worth more than £700m to do things like run test and trace systems and roll out vaccines. In February, ministers lifted restrictions on spending on consultants in Whitehall, making it possible for the firms to rake in millions more.
