The Supreme Court of El Salvador ruled that the country’s president can be re-elected for two terms, opening the door for current President Nayib Bukele to run for re-election in 2024.
The ruling was issued late on Friday, and the judge appointed by the lawmakers of Booker’s ruling party in May issued it after they removed the former judge. This step has aroused strong criticism from Washington and other foreign powers.
The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court ordered the Supreme Electoral Tribunal to allow a “president who did not take office in the previous period to run for the second time”.
The Booker government is also preparing to carry out constitutional reforms aimed at extending the president’s term from five to six years, including the possibility of revocation of the president’s term.
This has not yet been submitted to the Central American National Assembly controlled by Booker’s party and its allies.
President Bukele, 40, did not comment on the court’s ruling.
In 2014, the same court ruled that the president must be re-elected 10 years after leaving office.
