- The British government is not prepared to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.
- The National Audit Office of the United Kingdom highlighted the different concerns of the government.
- It said the government did not heed the warning.
The British government spending watchdog said on Friday that the British government was unprepared for crises like the coronavirus pandemic, failed to learn from the simulation exercises, and was distracted by leaving the European Union.
More than 143,000 people in the UK have died from Covid-19, which has sparked criticism of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s response, which was originally based on plans to deal with the influenza pandemic rather than the novel coronavirus.

The National Audit Office (NAO) also emphasized the role of Brexit in absorbing resources. The United Kingdom left the European Union on January 31, 2020, which was the country’s first confirmed Covid-19 case.
It stated that the Civil Emergency Secretariat allocated 56 of its 94 full-time equivalent employees to prepare for the potential disruption caused by no-deal Brexit, which limits its ability to focus on other risks and contingency plans at the same time.
The head of NAO, Gareth Davies, said in a statement:
This pandemic has exposed the vulnerability of the UK in the emergency situation of the entire system. The emergency situation is very extensive, involving all levels of government and society.
The NAO added that the government did not pay enough attention to pandemic simulation warnings, such as the planning and capacity simulations conducted in 2007 and 2016.
The government stated that its response measures are guided by scientific and medical experts and have improved the pandemic response plan based on the 2016 simulation.
A government spokesperson said: “We have always said that we should learn from the pandemic and promised to conduct a full public investigation in the spring.”
“We are prepared for a series of scenarios. Although extensive arrangements have been made, this is an unprecedented pandemic that poses a challenge to health systems around the world.”
