“Although I was acquitted, I deeply regretted the incident at the time, and I still do it today. I talked to my wife and family at the time and thanked them for their forgiveness and support,” he said. “We think this is over, and I can fully focus on the team, just like I have done in the past three or four years.
“However, I recently realized that this kind of private text exchange will be made public. In retrospect, my behavior in 2017 did not meet the standards of the Australian cricket team leader or the wider community. For my wife, my family and the other party I apologize for the hurt and pain.
“I apologize for any damage this has caused to the reputation of our sport, and I believe that resigning as captain is the right decision, effective immediately. I don’t want this to become a detriment to the team before the huge Ashes series. Unwelcome interference.
“I like my role as the captain of the Australian cricket team. Leading the Australian men’s test team is the greatest honor of my athletic career. I thank my teammates for their support and I am proud of what we can achieve together.”
Paine said in a statement that he will continue to stay with the Australian team. However, it is not clear who will lead the team.
David Warner was banned from a leadership position for life for his role in Sandpaper Legends, but Smith’s two-year suspension has ended and he is interested in being team captain again. However, he is a weak leader, and CA may not want to return to him.
Pat Cummins is Paine’s deputy captain and is regarded as the leader of the future. Historically, Australia rarely regards bowlers as captains, and Cummins has a lot of work in three forms. However, he is the most suitable person to be a politician.
