Organizers reported 10 new cases related to the Olympics, including media, contractors and other personnel, down from the 15 reported on Saturday.
An IOC member from South Korea tested positive for the coronavirus when arriving in Tokyo. Former Olympic athlete Liu Chengmin was vaccinated, which reflects that even vaccinated participants are at risk of infection.
The infection rate of the general population in the capital is climbing, with more than 1,000 new cases in four consecutive days. Opinion polls show that with the influx of overseas tourists, many Japanese are opposed to hosting the Olympics.
The rainy season ended in Tokyo on Friday, bringing blue skies and intense heat. Virus countermeasures such as blocking increase the burden on participants.
