- US Congressman Paul Gossar was condemned.
- He posted a video threatening Alexander Ocasio-Cortez and Joe Biden.
- Gosal also lost his position on the House Committee.
U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday condemned Trump’s supporters for publishing an animated video depicting a lawmaker killing a colleague and attacking President Joe Biden, a rare move that highlights the hostility between the opposing sides of Congress.
The far-right Congressman Paul Gossar was forced to endure the public humiliation of the audience because he was asked to appear in the “well” of the House of Commons to “declare condemnation.”
Republicans in Arizona were forced to listen in silence because the Democrats spent more than an hour reprimanding what he called workplace harassment and encouraging violence against women.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said before condemning: “We cannot let members joke about murdering each other or threatening the President of the United States.”
She added:
This is not only a harm to our elected officials, but also an insult to the House of Representatives system.
The condemnation resolution is the harshest form of punishment in the House of Representatives, and only a few congressmen faced sanctions in the last century-the most recent one was 11 years ago.
Donald Trump’s allies
Gossal also joined the ranks of Trumpism instigator Marjorie Taylor Greene, becoming the second House Republican to lose his position on a House committee this year.
As an outspoken ally of Donald Trump, he responded to the former president’s false statement about the theft of the 2020 election, and Gossard’s connection with white nationalists and his complaints against the mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Praised and condemned.
He posted a Japanese anime-style video on Twitter. The video showed him fatally slashing the neck of New York Democrat Rep. Alexander Ocasio-Cortez before attacking Biden with a sword. Condemned again.
Gossal deleted the video after being strongly opposed. The video received millions of views, but he did not express any regrets or apologize to his target in public.
In a provocative speech before legislators, Gossar argued that he was a victim of censorship, ridiculously comparing himself to the founding father Alexander Hamilton, who was the target of condemning the vote failure in the late 18th century.
He denied that the video represented a threat of violence, arguing that he was trying to start a dialogue about illegal immigration.
He did not explain why the video about undocumented immigrants singled out Ocasio-Cortez, a third-generation New Yorker and a lifelong American citizen rooted in Puerto Rico, the U.S. territory.
Opposition lawmakers complained that an ethics investigation should be conducted before any punishment was imposed, and only two of the 213 people voted to hold Gossar accountable.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy downplayed the actions of conspiracy theorists and suggested that Democrats should focus on tackling inflation, rather than let Gosal take responsibility.
He accused the majority party of adopting double standards for soft handling of congresswomen Maxine Waters and Ilhan Omar, both of whom have been criticized for inflammatory language.
He said:
They are destroying this institution, silence a few people, and thereby silence millions of Americans.
Ocasio-Cortez accused McCarthy of showing nihilistic contempt for the work of the House of Representatives.
“This is a sad day. Members of a political party leading a party in the United States of America cannot let themselves say that posting a description of the murder of a member of Congress is wrong, but decided to venture into the entry point regarding gasoline prices and inflation,” she said.
“What’s so difficult? What’s so difficult to say that this is wrong?”
