After a brief power struggle with Haiti’s appointed prime minister, Ariel Henry, Claude Joseph will resign as the acting prime minister of Haiti.

Joseph announced his intentions in an interview Washington postThe Associated Press and another Haitian official confirmed the news.

On July 7, when Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated, Joseph served as interim prime minister. Since Moiz’s death, Joseph has also served as the country’s foreign minister and has been ruling the country with the support of the military.

Moise appointed Henry as prime minister two days before he was killed, and Henry, a 71-year-old neurosurgeon, had not yet been sworn in. Joseph argued that this meant that he would lead the country because Henry had no right to hold leadership positions without the oath of office.

against postalJoseph said, “Everyone who knows me knows that I am not interested in this battle or any form of seizure of power. The president is my friend. I am just interested in getting justice for him.”

It is not clear when Henry will take over as prime minister.
