- The U.S. State Department has downgraded its Covid 19-related travel advice for India to “Level 3-Reconsidering Travel”.
- The Covid-19 warning used to be the highest level 4 “Don’t Travel”.
- The warning to Pakistan has also been eased.
The U.S. State Department said in a statement on Tuesday that the U.S. State Department has reduced its Covid 19-related travel advisory to India to “Level 3-Reconsidering Travel.”
It said that consultation with Pakistan has also been relaxed. The Covid-19 warning used to be the highest level 4 “Don’t Travel”.
India’s daily coronavirus cases have fallen It fell to a four-month low after the second wave that paralysed the healthcare system. But experts warned the authorities not to reopen the city quickly and expressed concern about overcrowding in tourist attractions.
The decision does not affect the travel restrictions imposed in May, which prohibit almost all non-US citizens who have been to India in the past 14 days from entering the United States.
South Africa, China, Iran, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Ireland and 26 countries in Europe that allow crossing open borders have also implemented similar travel restrictions.
U.S. permanent residents and family members, as well as some other non-U.S. citizens, such as students, are not subject to this restriction.
Sources told Reuters that the White House will hold a new round of high-level meetings on travel restrictions this week, but there is no sign that it plans to quickly lift these restrictions.
“Any decision to reopen travel will be guided by our public health and medical experts. We take this very seriously,” White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said on Monday.
Almost all passengers traveling to the United States by air must show a test negative for the coronavirus or proof of recovery from Covid-19.
