NEW YORK CITY — The United States Postal Service hosted a special event in New York on January 20 to commemorate the Year of the Tiger.
The event commemorates the third in a series of 12 stamps for the Lunar New Year.
Special guests include Michelle Yun, Vice President of Global Arts Programs and Director of the Asia Society Museum in New York, lion dancers at the Chinese Cultural Center in New York, Ying H. Yen, Executive Director of the Chinese Cultural Center in New York, and Honorary Guard of the NYPD Ceremonial Unit.
Art Director Antonio Alcala designed the stamps using original art by Camille Chew.
Using orange as the main color – the iconic feature of the Bengal tiger and said to be one of the lucky colors for those born in the Year of the Tiger – the tiger mask in the stamp design incorporates an element of symbolism. Some of the patterns and details were created taking into account the style of Asian textiles, as well as the green flowers that represent the arrival of spring, which is also a symbol of the Chinese New Year in Chinese culture. The pattern on the top of the tiger’s head – printed with purple foil – references the celestial theme of the Chinese zodiac.
