Vietnamese man sentenced to 5 years in jail for spreading coronavirus

Official Vietnamese media reported that on Monday, a man was sentenced to five years in prison for violating strict Covid-19 quarantine rules and spreading the virus to others.

According to the Viet Nam official news agency (VNA), 28-year-old Le Van Tri was convicted of “spreading dangerous infectious diseases” in a one-day trial at the Southern Ca Mau Province People’s Court.

Due to targeted large-scale testing, active contact tracing, strict border restrictions and strict quarantine, Vietnam has always been one of the successful cases of coronavirus in the world. However, new infections since late April have destroyed this record.

The news agency said: “Dong returned to Jin Mao from Ho Chi Minh City… and violated the 21-day quarantine regulations.”

It added:

Dong infected eight people, one of whom died of the virus one month after treatment.

Reuters did not immediately contact Jinmao Court for comment.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Vietnam’s southernmost province of Jin Mao has reported only 191 cases and 2 deaths, far below the nearly 260,000 cases and 10,685 deaths in Ho Chi Minh City, the epicenter of the country’s coronavirus.

Vietnam is fighting the worsening Covid-19 epidemic, which has infected more than 536,000 people and caused 13,385 deaths, most of which occurred in the past few months.

The country sentenced two other people to 18 months and two years of probation on the same charges.
