One of the most iconic towns in MP is Maheshwar – its name conjures images of the great Lord Shiva! The culture of this small town is steeped in mythology and its history is recorded in ancient Puranas.
In the 18th century, the famous Malhar Rao Holkar III played an important role in the development of Maheshwar. Maheshwar is a charming town steeped in history and heritage, just 95 kilometers from the bustling city of Indore. Once the home of King Arjuna and the legendary Lord Parashurama of Jamadagni Rishi, Renuka Devi and Mahabharata, Maheshwar is a town transformed from the ancient city of Somwanshiya. With its 5th-century handloom factory and carvings on the fortress walls telling the history of its rule, a visit to this Malwa town on the banks of the Narmada River is a must.
To get there, just follow the road to Pithampur, towards Manpur, then head towards Dhamnod until you reach Ajanta Talkies or Maheshwar local police station, approximately 2.5 hours drive. What are you waiting for? An adventure awaits you! Turning right from the police station will take you to the historic Ahilya Fort, home to the famous Chapai handloom. With a history dating back to the 5th century, Maheshwar has been at the forefront of India’s textile industry. Producing more than 100,000 meters of fabric each year, these weavers are more than artisans – they are the backbone of an industry that has empowered women for centuries.
From the iconic Maheshwari sarees to the ever-evolving craftsmanship, Chapai Handloom is a testament to the rich culture of the region. let’s see! Come experience the royal splendor of Ahilya Fort, an 18th-century stone building built by Maratha Queen Ahilya Devi Holkar. Start your tour at 9am to beat the midday heat and enjoy the stunning views of this majestic fortress. The sun starts to shine after 11am, so be sure to explore all the little nooks and crannies of this architectural marvel before it gets too hot.
Not only will you marvel at the fort, but you will also be able to observe the queen’s cultural taste for art all around Maheshwar town! As you walk down the winding steps towards the majestic Narmada River, you will be captivated by the intricate and fascinating carvings that adorn the city’s temples, buildings and ghats. Part of the Devi Ahilya Fort is still in the care of Richard Holkar, son of the last Maharaja of Indore, Shivaji Rao Holkar, while the rest is open to tourists like us! Take a moment to admire the intricate artwork on the walls of the fortress and the outer temples, a time when the palace was truly alive and well.
Picture the marathoners adorning the court in their dazzling Phetas, with the heavenly petals of the sacred ceremony scattered in the air – what a sight to behold! My creativity soars as I imagine living the royal life in this sumptuous palace belonging to the Holkar dynasty. After starting to visit the fort, I hopped on a small boat and cruised along the Narmada River, visiting the Raj Rajeshwar and Akhileshwar temples. We even made a brief stop at the Shiva Temple in the middle of the river – it was truly spectacular!
After our temple hopping trip, my mates and I decided to take a break at Labboo’s Cafe – a much needed break indeed, I must say! This quaint cafe just outside the fort will delight your taste buds with a delicious selection of local delicacies and tantalizing coffees! Plus, it has very clean restrooms – a real boon for any weary traveler looking to unwind from the autumn chill. You may already be familiar with the majestic beauty of Maheshwar and Narmada river, seen in many movies and TV series such as Bajirao Mastani, Ashoka, Yamala Pagla Deewana, Neerja, Tulsi, Tevar, Mahashivratri and Jhansi Ki Rani.
But there is nothing better than visiting Devi Ahilya Fort to experience these scenes and emotions first-hand! Before you leave Maheshwar, don’t forget to drop by Mahalaxmi Handloom Stores on Fort Road – the best place to pick up authentic Maheshwari style clothing and fabrics! These delicate sarees are usually a fine blend of cotton and silk and are elaborately adorned with Zari-Brocade borders in various designs.
A visit to Maheshwar would not be complete without admiring the beautiful, eye-catching designs featuring floral, striped and tartan borders. Later that afternoon we decided to go to Dar’s Jirabbagh Palace for a nice lunch. If you’re looking for a more local experience, Narmada Retreat, Panchvati Palace, Indian Heritage Food, Maheshwar Cottage Restaurant and Rajrajeshwar Bhojnalaya are some of the most recommended restaurants in the area. For a truly memorable experience, come during the rainy or winter months. This is an experience you won’t soon forget!
