Judge Nancy Wapps
Vermont Governor Phil Scott announced on February 25 the appointment of Superior Court Judge Nancy Wapless to the Vermont Supreme Court.
“Character, competence, commitment and chemistry are qualities I look for in my appointment,” Scott wrote in a statement. “There is no doubt that Judge Wapps possesses these qualities and will excel in court.”
Wappels’ parents fled China’s communist revolution, and at first only her father could immigrate to the United States due to racial quotas, and the family was separated for four years. Later, the family made a living working in small Chinese restaurants outside New York City.
“My parents traveled half the world with clothes on their backs almost exclusively, lived in a place where they didn’t speak their language, and they didn’t have any friends or family,” Waps said in a statement.
“They are here in search of greater opportunity and a desire for a life of dignity and decency. They are as proud as I am of this historic appointment.”
After graduating from St. John’s University Law School, Waps worked as a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in New York City. In Vermont, she served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office and worked in private companies before being appointed to the Supreme Court.
