Weekly Economics Podcast: Fast Fashion

With the COP26 Global Climate Conference held later this year, we will spend five episodes in this series to discuss pressing climate issues. In this episode, we are talking about fast fashion.

Summer is here, Love Island is everywhere. The show’s sexy singles are competing for huge prizes and inevitably have reached sponsorship agreements with fast fashion brands such as Shein, Boohoo and Pretty Little Thing. But these companies are accused of exploiting workers and polluting the environment.

Our T-shirt label might say “Made in China”, but raw materials and finished products often travel around the world before entering our wardrobe. How did we get such a complex system? What is the cost of our environment and the people who make our clothes? What can the fashion industry tell us about how the global economy works?

In this episode, Ayeisha joins Maxine Bédat, the director New Standards Institute And author Unraveling: the life and death of a piece of clothing.
