This week, a controversial deportation flight flew to Jamaica. The legal challenge means that only one in ten of the 90 people who will be deported are on the plane. Those planning to be deported include those whose lawyers have stated that they have the right to stay in the UK under Windrush rules, or those who have arrived in the UK as children.
Critics say our immigration system is too cruel. But what is its origin story? How does it change over time? What does it have to do with British colonial history?
