Virtual priority care is a telehealth trend that has emerged over the past few years. Virtual Priority Care directs patients before or instead of in-person visits with clinicians for video visits, phone calls, or other digital interactions.
Payers, self-insured employers, and some providers are using virtual priority care in primary and urgent care settings to more easily triage patients’ care needs, determine the best care setting from in-person to virtual, and drive follow-up efforts. This technology has similar applications in niche areas of telehealth such as behavioral health and dermatology.
For patients, it means they can more easily start the journey of care that works best for them, anytime, anywhere. Healthcare organizations can build more efficient, personalized and comprehensive care solutions that guide patients through the care journey.
The public health emergency declared when Covid-19 became a pandemic drove the growth of virtual priority care. Bipartisan support for virtual health in Congress also played a big role. But as the industry moves toward a virtual-first future, we must address the following issues:
- Has it had a permanent impact on healthcare industry?
- Has it resonated so strongly that it will continue to be widely used by employers, payers and providers?
- What is the balance between virtual care and in-person clinician appointments?
- How are lawmakers responding to these challenges?
