The World Health Organization’s emergency committee warned on Thursday that the new Covid-19 variant is expected to spread worldwide, which may make it more difficult to stop the pandemic.
“The pandemic is far from over,” the committee warned in a statement after meeting on the pandemic on Wednesday.
Committee Chairman Didier Hussein admitted to reporters that “recent trends are worrisome”.
He said that after WHO first announced the so-called Public Health Emergencies of International Concern (PHEIC)-its highest alert level-a year and a half, “we are still catching up with this virus, and the virus is still catching us.” .

Currently, four related variants of Covid-19 dominate the global pandemic, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma, especially the rapidly spreading Delta variant that was first discovered in India.
But the committee warned that the worse situation may still be behind, and pointed out that “new and potentially more dangerous variants of concern are likely to emerge and spread globally, and these variants may be more challenging.”
When mutations are considered more easily spread, more deadly, or likely to exceed the protection of certain vaccines, the WHO declared it “worrying.”
