“The Speaker’s Corner is a manifestation of freedom, unlike any other place in the world,” said Andrea Williams, CEO of the Christian Law Center. “What happened in Hatun Tash in the speaker’s corner is distressing. Sharia law is being enforced at the back door, and Sunday’s incident is a serious escalation after a series of worrying events.”

Williams said that this is the most serious of the CLC’s so-called “related incidents,” involving Tash in a historic open-air debate venue.

CLC previously submitted a pre-litigation letter to the Metropolitan Police of London on July 5, seeking compensation on behalf of Tash for assaults, false arrests, illegal imprisonment and harassment caused by repeated failure to protect her. CLC is the legal service end of Christian Concern, a non-profit advocacy organization.

In December last year, Tash was arrested for “violating coronavirus regulations.” She asked the police for help and asked them why they would interfere with the legal freedom of speech of another spokesperson there. In May of this year, after Tash, a member of the DCCI (Defense of Christ and Critical Islam) ministries, was physically attacked, she was arrested for what the police called “breaking the peace”. At that time, when the discussion became heated, she was sharing Muhammad’s cartoons, and then a group of people took offensive actions against her.

This letter represents Tash seeking compensation for assaults, false arrests, illegal imprisonment and harassment caused by repeated failures to protect her.

The Free Speech Coalition (of which Tash is a member) also wrote to the Metropolitan Police Department expressing concerns about her treatment.

Chris Humphries, the London Underground Police Media and Communications Manager, told Weekly newspaper The police did not add anything to their previous statement.

But Tash told CLC that the police could have prevented the incident from happening.

“The inaction of the police led to what happened to me yesterday,” Tash said, noting that it is clear from the video of the incident that the person who attacked her intended to kill her. “In the past, they thought it was easier to expel me than to deal with people who intimidated and threatened me. My attacker was not even afraid of the police because he was right in front of them. This is heartbreaking. We live in a policeman who doesn’t want to arrest Muslims because of fear of being In a society called’Islamophobia’.”

Speakers’ Corner is located on the northeast edge of Hyde Park, near Marble Arch and Oxford Street. In 1872, a bill of Parliament reserved this part for public speech. It is well known that historical figures such as Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, and George Orwell used the area to demonstrate freedom of speech. To this day, it is not uncommon for people to gather there to listen to fans express their views on Sunday mornings.

“Our freedom is up in the air,” Williams said. “If Hatun is silent because of the violence in the speaking corner, then we are all silent.”
