Why is reading so important to children?

*This is a collaborative post.

One of the first things your child will learn to do primary school is how to read. They need skills in learning and in everyday life as they read street signs and information displayed by their surrounding vision. It can also be a nice leisure activity to help them relax while keeping their brains active. Beyond that, there are a few facts about reading that will surprise you.

new perspective

We are all unique with a wide range of ideas and perspectives. It’s great because we can all learn and grow from each other. This is important for children as they may encounter people who disagree and need to be respected. Books help children do this because they are written by a range of authors and represent a wide variety of characters. As they follow the details of the storyline and discussions, they can begin to see things from a new perspective and learn how to empathize with others.

expand their knowledge

Books also teach children about the world around them. Whether they’re reading fictional, action-packed storybooks or educational encyclopedias, they’ll be introduced to many topics that can help them grow their general knowledge.

keep your brain active

Unlike watching TV, reading stimulates the brain. You have to use your imagination to think deeper and help children become creative and critical thinkers.

vocabulary

Reading is the fastest way to learn new words. Your child can discover them and become familiar with spelling, while also learning the context in which they are used.

Improve school performance

Children who read more are seen as doing better in school. This is partly due to their advanced comprehension skills as they are able to understand and understand the concepts they have to do as they read.
