Wisconsin Macro Conditions and Economic Confidence


WPR’s Joe Schultz: “The economy is the top concern for Wisconsin voters, but a majority views it negatively”:

Interestingly, the WisconSays/LaFollette poll (summer-fall 2023) shows no partisan divide when it comes to economic issues.

Differences in instructions may arise due to timing or wording (or both). My point is that the latter is more likely to be the source of the difference. Marquette poll questions could raise questions about the direction of the economy. In contrast, WisconSays' poll questions may reflect individual respondents' views on their financial situation.

Similar contrasts emerged in national polls, as Krugman.Because perceptions of economic conditions differ from those faced by individual survey respondents, the former can be heavily influenced by news coverage (see Harris and Sojourner, 2024).
