Death toll from the collapse of a hotel in the east China As the authorities ended the search and rescue mission, it was raised to 17 on Wednesday.
Suzhou said on its social media that 23 people had been rescued from the rubble of the Four Seasons New Century Hotel that collapsed on Monday afternoon. One of the released was not injured, and the other five were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Rescuers used cranes, ladders, metal cutters and search and rescue dogs to find survivors. Most of the victims were hotel guests.
More than 600 people and 120 vehicles, including the earthquake rescue team, were mobilized for the operation. Suzhou City is located near Shanghai in Jiangsu Province.
Lou Qinjian, the top official of Jiangsu Province and secretary of the municipal party committee, visited the rescuers and the victims on Tuesday.
The post stated that investigators will investigate the cause of the collapse and the police have summoned the hotel’s legal representative, manager, and architectural design and construction personnel. It said that some people have been placed under “criminal control measures,” indicating that they are under some form of detention or supervision. No number or name of the person who took such measures was given.
According to China’s online booking app Ctrip, the three-story, 54-room Four Seasons New Century Hotel opened in 2018.
Suzhou is a popular tourist destination, famous for its historic canals and traditional Chinese gardens as well as major commercial centers.
