You don’t need to be a ranking authority

Google’s search advocate John Mueller stated that not all websites need to be considered authoritative in order to rank high in search results.

This was stated in a Google Search Center SEO office hour hangout recorded on December 10.

Brian Harnish joined the live broadcast and asked Mueller a follow-up question about Mueller’s Reddit comments on the authority of the site.

Mueller says It’s hard to call a site authoritative After publishing 30 articles on specific topics.

In this case, Harnish asked Google’s opinion Single page website.

This led Mueller to add more background information to his statement on Reddit, stating that there is no need for every website to position itself as an authority.

Google’s John Mueller on website authority

As far as single-page websites are concerned, Mueller said it is possible to make good websites.

His comments on the need for more than 30 pages to be considered authoritative are on key, high-level topics.

For example, a website cannot only publish 30 articles about medical conditions and be regarded as having the same authority as a doctor.

Mueller said:

“I think you can make a good one-page website. So from this point of view, I am not too worried.

I think the Reddit post, as far as I know, is roughly like this: “I created 30 blog posts and they are really great, so my website should be authoritative.”

In my opinion, your leaving and creating 30 blog posts does not automatically make your website authoritative.

Especially for higher or more critical topics, you can’t just create 30 blog posts on medical topics and say, “I’m a doctor and I’ve written 30 articles.” So that’s where I go. . “

Most websites don’t need to worry about being an authority. They can still put content there and rank in search results.

Mueller gave the example of a small business selling products or services. In order for customers to find their products, companies do not need to be the highest authority in their fields.

“For many websites, it’s not that you need to be seen as an authority. You basically put your content there. If you are a small business, you are selling things. You don’t need to be an authority.

Especially for things like single-page websites, they are usually very focused on this one thing, and you don’t need to be an authority to do that thing.

I don’t know whether to sell e-books or provide information about business hours. Like, this is just information.

Therefore, from this point of view, a website with one page, I think it is very good. “

Mueller went on to say that a one-page website is a good starting point, but it can always be developed from there.

Consider how to add more pages to the site in the future so that it doesn’t get stuck where new content is constantly being added to a single page.

“About starting with a one-page website, I think it’s good, but I will think about where you want to go from there at some point.

Maybe you really want to create more pages and try to find a way, rather than by saying, okay, I must always put everything on one page so that I don’t get stuck. But when you see it fits, please scale it up. “
