YouTube introduces 5 new features for live streaming


YouTube has announced five new features for live streaming, some of which are currently in beta and others will be available later this year.

These features are previewed in videos on YouTube’s Creator Insider channel. They include:

  • ‘live together’
  • live ring
  • Real-time retargeting across channels
  • Uninterrupted split screen viewing
  • Live Q&A

Here’s more about these features and how they will enhance the livestreaming experience on YouTube.

1. Go Live Together – Collaborative Live Streaming

YouTube is currently conducting a small pilot test of a feature called Go Live Together.

This is a collaborative streaming feature for mobile devices. Go Live Together allows creators to invite guests to live with them by sending a link.

Hosts who create live broadcasts can invite and screen their guests before broadcasting to their audience.

Note that the visitor’s channel and user information will remain hidden during the live broadcast.

As the host of a Go Live Together livestream, you will be able to view livestream analytics in YouTube Studio just like any other livestream.

On the other hand, guests will not be able to see analytics.

Pre-roll and mid-roll ads can appear in Go Live Together streams, but guests won’t benefit from them either. Advertising revenue will be attributed to the host channel.

YouTube will seek to expand the number of creators who can access Go Live Together after the pilot test.

2. Live ring

YouTube is working hard to add live ringtones across the platform.

These rings will help viewers identify when the channel is live by adding rings around the channel’s profile picture.

The Live Ring is designed to increase the discovery and viewership of creators’ live streams on YouTube.

Clicking on your profile picture using the live badge ring will direct viewers to the event live stream.

The live ringtone is currently available on some screens on mobile devices and will expand on YouTube later this year.

3. Real-time retargeting across channels

The third feature in the works is called cross-channel real-time retargeting.

Today, creators with at least 1,000 subscribers can use an app called real-time redirection Direct their audience from a live or premiere to another live or premiere on their own channel.

However, they cannot send viewers to a live or premiere on another channel.

With the introduction of cross-channel live retargeting, creators with at least 1,000 subscribers and no active Community Guidelines strikes will be able to direct their viewers to live or premieres on different channels.

Channels being redirected to can add the channel they wish to allow redirects to, or allow all channels to redirect to them.

4. Mobile phone split screen viewing

YouTube is working to provide uninterrupted live viewing by providing two different viewing experiences for mobile devices using a split-screen approach.

With live Q&A, viewers will be able to submit questions during the live broadcast based on the creator’s question prompts.

Questions answered by creators will be temporarily pinned to the top of the live chat, and other viewers are encouraged to submit their own questions.
