Two of the 17 kidnapped members of a missionary group were in Haiti Their church organization in Ohio announced on Sunday that they were safe, “in good spirits, and cared for.”
The Christian Aid Department issued a statement stating that it was unable to provide the name of the person released, the reason for his release, or other information.
The organization said: “Although we are happy for this release, our hearts are with the 15 people who are still in custody.”
The missionary was kidnapped by the 400 Mawozo gang on October 16. Among the 16 American citizens and one Canadian citizen, there are 5 children. Their Haitian driver was also kidnapped.
It is not clear whether the Canadian has been released. Global News has contacted the Canadian Department of Global Affairs, but has not received a response at the time of publication.
The leader of the 400 Mawozo gang threatened to kill the hostages unless the gang’s demands were met. The authorities stated that the group asked for US$1 million per person, but it is not clear whether children are included.
The US government has urged American citizens to leave Haiti because of the country’s increasing insecurity and severe fuel shortage. Canada announced on Friday that it will withdraw all but essential personnel from its embassy.
