3 Easy Trader Joe’s Summer Flower Arrangements

DIY Trader Joe’s Summer Flower Arrangement Tips

Get there early!

TJ’s restocks their flowers daily, but they’re a hit! Getting there early will ensure you don’t miss the best of the crop!

Flowers for all seasons

TJ’s stocks evergreens like eucalyptus as well as seasonal flowers like tulips (spring) and chrysanthemums (fall). In spring and early summer, you’ll find tulips, peonies, hydrangeas and roses at Trader Joes.

Add filler

If you buy a single bouquet of Trader Joe’s flowers, fillers are a great way to add and make a pretty arrangement. Eucalyptus is often available year-round at TJ’s, and this leafy bloom is a gorgeous filler and complement to any flower arrangement. Baby’s breath is always beautiful with neutral fillers and white hydrangea-like flowers. You can also use green carnations, miniature roses, or other green fillers you can usually find at Trader Joe’s.

Use your leftovers to make vases

The lovely flower bud vase is a simple and sweet addition to a window sill, bathroom sink, or side table. Use any smaller leftover flowers from your arrangement to fill small vases and place around your home.

How to Make a Trader Joe’s Flower Arrangement

Step One: Pick Your Flowers

Head to Trader Joe’s and peruse the flower section. For summer, we love options like peonies, tulips, roses, and hydrangeas. You’ll also want to buy some filler, so look for fillers in a variety of colors and textures. Trader Joe’s often has eucalyptus, gypsophila, pompoms, and other greenery to choose from.

Step 2: Trim the leaves

Trim any leaves below the waterline of the vase. Leaves that are not trimmed below the waterline will make your flowers die faster. You can also prune the leaves further back depending on how full your arrangement is. If the leaves add nice green fullness and balance to your arrangement, leave them alone. If it’s full and the leaves are too busy, you’ll want to prune them.

Step 3: Prepare the Mixing Water

Add a little apple cider vinegar and sugar to the water in the vase. The apple cider vinegar acts as an antimicrobial to keep your flowers healthy, while the sugar acts as food for the flowers, keeping them alive longer. If your flowers have a flower feeder, you can use that instead.

Step 4: Cut the Stems

Cut the stems under running water before placing in fresh water and vase. This will keep the flowers fresh for longer.

Step 5: Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds dictates that odd-numbered arrangements are more visually appealing. So whether it’s 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9, choose an odd number of flowers to make it more visually appealing.

Step 6: Maintenance

Don’t forget to check your flowers every few days. They will last longer if you do some simple things to maintain them. Change the water after 3 days and cut the stems a little. Add a little cider vinegar and sugar mixture or flower food! This will keep them looking fresher, looking more beautiful and energized for longer.

Flower Arrangement #1: Tulips

Tulips are such a beautiful, elegant yet simple arrangement. We especially love the red and yellow varieties. The beauty of tulips is that you can simply buy a bouquet of tulips from TJ’s, remove the plastic, cut them open, have water ready, and voila! Using a vase with a widened top will give your tulips shape and fullness. This is the perfect centerpiece for your dining room or kitchen table, bedroom or living room. Tulips are such a beautiful first sign of spring in our home that I always look forward to seeing them bloom and decorate my table setting each year.

Flower Arrangement #2: Peonies

Peonies are one of our favorite flowers in June, and Trader Joe’s has them in stock almost this time of year. Nothing can replace the gorgeous aroma of a freshly bloomed peony. Likewise, you can keep your peony arrangement simple, as they are gorgeous and elegant in their own right. Display your peonies in beautiful vintage mason jars or earthenware vases. Placing peonies in a vase with a small top opening will allow the flowers to overlap and create a beautiful visual effect.

Flower Arrangement #3: Hydrangeas

We love this whimsical hydrangea arrangement with polka-dotted pompoms and some sweet wildflower and greenery accents. White hydrangeas last a long time if you prune the stems and change the water promptly. Add dimension to your layout by cutting different flowers and greenery at different heights. It helps to start with one flower, in this case we started with three hydrangea stems and filled them with greenery and smaller blooms.

Have fun and try different things. You can keep it simple with white and green, or add a pop of color like pink or purple.
