I’ve rounded up my favorite sangria recipes along with some helpful tips below. Whether it’s National Day or Christmas, you’ll love these light, refreshing sangria ideas!

What is Sangria?

If you’re unfamiliar with sangria, it’s a classic wine cocktail from Spain and Portugal. (Fun fact: According to European law, only drinks produced in these regions can be labeled as “sangria”). Traditional sangria combines white or red wine with fruit, triple sec, alcohol such as vermouth or brandy, and a blend such as soda or sparkling water.

What is the best wine for sangria?

When picking a wine for sangria, a good rule of thumb is to choose wines that are inexpensive and that you would still enjoy drinking on their own. You can make the perfect sangria from an affordable bottle as you mix it with other ingredients. The key is to choose the right variety:

  • red wine: For red wine sangria, Grenache, Pinot Noir, and Tempranillo are the best.
  • Liquor: When making white wine sangria, choose a crisp, dry white wine with high acidity. Good choices are Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. Moscato is also a good choice if you prefer a sweeter white wine.

What goes with sangria?

Whether I’m making sangria for two or a crowd, it pairs beautifully with many seasonal dishes and meal ideas. Here are some of our favorite recipes to pair with sangria:

Can I make sangria ahead of time?

Absolutely! Another reason I love preparing sangria for parties is that it’s so easy to make ahead. I’ve included specific instructions in the recipe below, but it’s pretty straightforward. Combine the ingredients, remove the ice, and place the sangria in the refrigerator to let the flavors develop overnight or up to 2 days in advance. In fact, I find that sangria tastes better when it’s soaked for a while.
