Studies have found a lot of long-term damage

According to a study, even after one year of illness, about half of the patients admitted to the hospital for coronavirus infection still suffer long-term effects. Therefore, the authors of the China study published in the journal The Lancet on Friday called for better consideration of the long-term effects of the disease. One year later, one-third of patients are still short of breath.

According to the study, among severely ill patients in the intensive care unit, the proportion of patients with long-term effects is even higher. The researchers used the medical records of nearly 1,300 patients treated in a hospital in Wuhan, China between January 2020 and May 2020, where the virus was first discovered.

For this study, data was collected six and twelve months after the end of treatment. According to this, the proportion of patients with at least one symptom or secondary disease after six months is 68%, and 49% after one year. The proportion of patients suffering from anxiety and depression rose slightly from 23% to 26%.
