Gravelbike driving report from Urwahn

DWaldwiesel.E from Urwahn, a manufacturer of Magdeburg, looks strange. In a traditional bicycle frame, the seat tube tries to combine forces with the down tube and chainstay on the bottom bracket shell, but there is a gap in the frame. Instead, the top tube winds down in an elegant curve, occupying the seatpost for a short distance, bending again, splitting and ending at the rear fork. With such formal language, the frame looks like a sculpture, especially at the back. Is that art? Yes or not, because on the one hand the original delusion is a pleasing feast, on the other hand the manufacturer has never forgotten the motto of “form follows function”.

The work of this organic structure is not surprising, but the fact that it is a steel frame. Although carbon as a material has long opened up new space for design, the possibilities of steel seem to be limited. This can only be achieved through a special 3D printing process, in which metal powder is layered and melted with a laser. This is how Urwahn makes the frame connection elements. The straight pipe is made of deep-drawn CroMo steel. All parts are assembled by hand by the frame manufacturer Rotor Bike from Leipzig, who is also responsible for the perfect grinding of the torque points.
