Review – There are many so-called “rugged” cases that can be used in various mobile phones. Rokform has been making them for a long time. Simply put, they are made differently. I have the opportunity to periodically rotate the Rugged Case named for the iPhone 13 Pro and learn what their latest version must provide. How is this going.

What is it?

Rokform’s Rugged Case is a highly protected case, compatible with MagSafe, with a built-in mounting system and additional magnets, and can be mounted on almost any metal surface.

What’s in the box?

  • Rokform robust housing
  • Detachable center mount magnet

Hardware specifications

magnet: Two industrial strength magnets (one detachable) and one MagSafe compatible array
Mountain: Built-in Roklock® twist lock installation system, compatible with all RokLock accessories
Fall protection:4 times MIL-SPEC 801G-516.6 standard, protect your equipment from 6 sides 360º
Material: Carbon fiber textured polycarbonate and grip TPU

Design and features

Obviously, Rokform has a different view of the aesthetics of the Rugged enclosure. In addition to the 45º angle in the corner, the combination of materials, textures and shapes together constitute a unique case.

As you can see above, the most obvious feature is the RokLock center installation inside the MagSafe ring and the textured rubber rectangle with the magnet hidden below it. Inside is a microfiber layer with hexagonal printing to ensure the safety of the back of the iPhone.

You can remove the “plug” in the middle to display the RokLock interface.

The buttons are well protected, but they are still easy to activate.

set up

Installing the protective case is not difficult, but you need to start from the lower part of the phone, because the side of the protective case is much stronger. Then it just pops the top of the case into place.

If you want to use the RokLock mounting system with any available accessories, or if you want to charge via Qi or MagSafe, you need to remove the magnet in the center of the MagSafe circle. To do this, remove the phone from the phone case, and then push the central magnet from the outside to the inside until it bounces off.

Performance

You can immediately see that this situation is more durable than most situations. Since it contains two magnets, this is also one of the heavier situations you may encounter. One is located in the lowest third position of the housing, and the other is located in the center of the detachable MagSafe ring. Both have a textured rubber surface, which is slightly proud of the rest of the back.

These magnets support many new use cases, which you will find as you use them. You can connect your phone to almost any ferromagnetic metal surface, such as steel, iron, and even some (but not all) stainless steel appliances. When you follow the instructions for some of the processes you just looked up on Youtube, it will be very convenient to stick your phone on the tool cabinet. Or make sure you don’t accidentally knock your phone off the metal table in the cafe because it is escorting you. If you like to put your phone in the front pocket, you will sometimes find that your trouser pocket is magnetically attached to the car. Yes, this is embarrassing.

One of my favorite features is the RokLock interface. It is compatible with all of Rokform’s twist lock solutions, from windshields to bicycles to motorcycle mounts. Over the years, many of my bicycles have been equipped with bike brackets, including the latest V4 Pro series bike brackets currently installed on my commuter electric bike.

This is a rock-solid solution that uses 1/8 turn to lock the interface, and then align the housing and the magnet in the mount for further fixation.

You can see more from the bottom. Before MagSafe, the round silver magnet visible here was directly above the lower magnet of the Rokform housing. Adding MagSafe to the housing design pushes the lowercase magnet further down, so the alignment is now a bit off. In addition to the RokLock mechanical interface, there is a lot of magnetism, but you will notice that when you place the case, the way the magnet is automatically centered does not align correctly with the RokLock, so you have to resist the magnetism a little to lock it. It’s not a big deal, but it’s annoying.

If you want to know how powerful the RokLock system is, please watch the 2021 video, where the iPhone 12 Pro Crystal Case is installed on my eMTB bike. It was a fun day to ride a bicycle. I passed the landing point when I landed, was a bit crooked in the air, was greatly affected and fell down, but my phone never moved.

When you put it down for the first time, you will notice that it sounds different. The combination of polycarbonate and TPU can protect all sides, and the impact of these corners sounds softer. I don’t recommend that you give up your phone for fun, but you will be happy to get this extra protection.

One disadvantage of the center magnet is that it will disable or at least interfere with wireless charging. So unless you only charge with a cable, you will want to take it out. You also need to remove it to use any twist lock accessories. If you want dual magnets, but also want wireless charging or use a RokLock mount, this will set up a sticky cycle of installation and removal. The good news is that even if there is only one magnet at the bottom, it is powerful enough to mount your phone magnetically, and then RokLock can be opened and used, and wireless charging begins.

what do I like

  • Burly structure and unique angular shape
  • Protect your phone seriously
  • Compatible with screen protectors

What will i change

  • Hope to be able to remove the center magnet without removing the phone
  • Disappointingly, the new MagSafe protective case makes the bike mount magnet off-center
  • Definitely one of the 70g heavier boxes without a central magnet in place

Final thoughts

Rokform’s Rugged case can easily become one of the most protective cases you can get for your new iPhone. The built-in magnet provides some cool installation opportunities, and with the available bike, motorcycle, and car mounts, it can do whatever you want. If the extra weight doesn’t bother you, this may be your Rok situation.
